As mentioned in my best entry level road bikes 2009 post, bikes are coming out all the time, prices regularly change and so on. So these types of posts quickly become outdated. But there are some real bike bargains to be had at the moment. This time of year often sees end of season sales, especially as they choose this time of year to release the bikes for next season.
Here’s a round up of some great entry level or intermediate road bikes to be snapped up for less than a grand (£1000).
Well for under £600 there are limited stock left of the Focus Variado Compact 2009. However, it’s such a great value for money bike that there really aren’t many left and probably only in limited sizes. So be quick and be an unusual size :)
Also from Wiggle, with limited stock left is the Focus Variado Expert 2009, this one has a 105 groupset and for less than £840 is an awesome addition to anyone’s stable. Needless to say, the whole Focus range (made exclusively by wiggle) has been highly regarded by many. The 2009 range was no exception. Bizarrely, they are also offering the 2010 version of the Focus Variado Expert at the same price! So if you’re quick, perhaps they won’t notice!!! It is a beautiful looking bike as well – check it out…
If carbon tickles your fancy then for less than £1000 you can the Raleigh Avanti Carbon Comp with 12k weave and 105 groupset. It’s got some good reviews and is also fairly attractive…
Or for bang on a grand you can get the carbon Felt Z45 2009 which weighs in at just 8.6kg! Not bad for a grand, although – beware that it only has the Tiagra groupset (one below 105 and one above Sora), so you may want to upgrade this at some point. Having said that, since the technology trickles down each year, this years Tiagra, is last year’s 105 so the differences are marginal at best.
Good luck bagging a bargain, let me know how you get on :)
