Scicon Aeronaut saddle bag review

The saddle bag is a fairly humble object. One of those cycling items you tend to take for granted (until you get a puncture). It’s probably not something you give a lot of thought to before purchasing. Scicon, the Italian bike luggage experts, have decided that it’s time for a change to the common saddle bag and come up with the innovative and unusual Aeronaut.

Smooth and Sleek

The first thing that strikes you about the Aeronaut is the shape. Like a large, fluorescent yellow pebble, there are no angles to be seen. Scicon designers reckon this makes it one of the most aerodynamic saddle bags available. The next thing you notice is the lack of zips. A silicone cover forms a tight seal over the shaped frame of the saddle bag and helps keep everything smooth and sleek.

Access to the contents involves removing the cover by pulling on the tabs on each end. The frame is made of fibreglass providing protection for the contents – there’s room for a couple of road tubes and tyre levers. The excellent Scicon Roller System allows attachment to the saddle in seconds without tools, and allows easy removal and attachment of the bag.

Conclusion

The Aeronaut is a striking design and simple to use, but probably a bit small for everyday use. After fitting in a tube and the provided tyre levers, I was unable to squash in my mobile phone or any extra tools. If you only need a small saddle bag for a phone and some keys, on a time trial bike for instance, it may be ideal. The bag also comes in black.
