Kask K10 Helmet Review

No, I'd never heard of Kask either, until their lids appeared atop the Sky Pro Cycling team. I was in the market for a new helmet and fortunately Paragon Sports stocks the full range of Kask items. Having tried on what seemed like every helmet in the shop – to the obvious delight of the sales assistant - I left with a brand new Kask K10. Here in the USA, a few brands dominate the bicycle equipment market. Giro and Bell, both owned by Easton-Bell sports, are the giants of the helmet... read more...

Knog Blinder Review

Australian company Knog first came to my attention when I bought a couple of their Frog bike lights. The silicon encased LED lights looked great and were highly practical, not relying on brackets to fix them to my handlebars or seatpost. Switching the lights between bikes or attaching them to a helmet was a doddle and if you looked at them through squinty eyes they really did look a bit like frogs. Having said that, although bright, they weren’t quite powerful enough t... read more...

Chrome Kursk Shoes Review

“What colour would you like?” asked Corinne from Chrome as we discussed a test pair of their Kursk shoes. “Whatever you have available” was my cheery reply – the black or grey ones I’d seen on the website both looked great. I have to confess to a slight intake of breath as I ripped open the smart packaging that came remarkably quickly from San Francisco.  I can safely say that I have never previously owned a pair of red shoes. Even in my five-a-side football days, I never ... read more...

A new online cycling magazine is launched

This morning I'm very pleased and excited to announce the launch of a new site that I am the Content Manager for. It's a brand spanking new magazine style website - bikesoup.cc.  If you've been a reader of Daily Cycle for a while, you will know that I have been a strong advocate of the Bikesoup brand for some time now.  In fact, I have been working with Antony Auty (Chief Officer of Bikesoup) for around 18 months or so. He is a strong believer in Daily Cycle and has been instr... read more...

Swrve Jeans Review

Whilst wearing lycra to the pub might get you some funny looks, cycling in jeans is not always the most comfortable experience. Denim, whilst hardwearing, is not the most forgiving of fabrics and seams placed in what might be termed “sensitive” areas, can dig in after a surprisingly short time in the saddle. Fortunately Los Angeles-based swrve have tackled this with some very bike-friendly features on their latest jeans. Form and Function Founded in 2005, swrve have always been at the f... read more...

Domestiques required to join Daily Cycle

Are you passionate about cycling? Do you want the world to hear your views, loves, hates, knowledge and emotions induced by this wonderful sport?  "I started writing for Daily Cycle when I wanted to get my name out there, and build up a portfolio. I get to research topics of interest (ie read cycle websites and blogs for hours), test and review products (ie ponce around in shiny new gear) and witter on at length. It must open doors, because I've got two articles forthcoming in Cycli... read more...

Merino Wool Arm Warmers for Flexible Winter Riding

Some riders seem to think that arm warmers are an unnecessary purchase. But actually, they make winter riding (and year round riding) a much more flexible affair. A decent pair of arm warmers will keep you warm and dry when you need it but be small and light enough to tuck away when you get too hot. This may seem obvious but using arm warmers has some real advantages. You require less base layers Winter riding generally requires a wardrobe stocked full of base layers. If, like me, you are... read more...

Saddle Bag review - Scicon Aeronaut

The saddle bag is a fairly humble object. One of those cycling items you tend to take for granted (until you get a puncture). It’s probably not something you give a lot of thought to before purchasing. Scicon, the Italian bike luggage experts, have decided that it’s time for a change to the common saddle bag and come up with the innovative and unusual Aeronaut. Smooth and Sleek The first thing that strikes you about the Aeronaut is the shape. Like a large, fluorescent yellow... read more...

bikeParka review

There are several cycling essentials in this world. A bicycle helmet and a bike are cycling essentials. The ability to enjoy speeding down a hill, laughing whilst overtaking a traffic jam of cars, or cackling like a crazed witch whilst getting yourself caked in mud on an off road adventure - these are cycling essentials. Keeping your bike clean, safe and dry is definitely another one of those cycling essentials. The typical view to keeping your bike safe and dry is to use a decent storag... read more...

The Obree Way – Review

This weekend, cycling legend, Graeme Obree publishes his long awaited training manual, “The Obree Way -a training manual for cyclists”. 17 years in the making, The Obree Way continues a tradition typical of Obree with his own unique insight into the training  techniques that took him from club cyclist to multiple World Champion. Graeme Obree is one of this nation’s greatest cyclists.  The underdog who built his own bike, trained without technology and went on to break perhaps the ... read more...

Rainlegs Review

December is our wettest month. Met Office statistics show that you can expect at least 13 days of rain in the final month of the year. Suddenly, commuting seems less appealing, there’s nothing quite as bad as arriving at work sopping wet. Fortunately, help is at hand thanks to an innovative Dutch product that at least keeps your legs dry. The Product I’ve never liked waterproof trousers. Cumbersome and awkward, they’re not the best legwear for riding a bike. You might not get wet from the r... read more...

Cycling Holiday Review–West Bay Club–Isle of Wight

This weekend I was given the opportunity to review a stay in one of the privately owned cottages at West Bay Club on the Isle of Wight. I jumped at the chance – who wouldn’t?! It’s a three bedroom, very spacious cottage so I was able to bring the family (including mother-in-law). I expected a pretty good time, but what I got was one of the best weekends of cycling (and vacationing) that I have ever experienced. It helped that the weather happened to be astoundingly good, but to be honest I... read more...

Scicon Aerocomfort Plus Review

My previous experience of a bike bag was not a happy one. Travelling by train for a cycling holiday in the Alps, I bought the cheapest one I could find on ebay. After an hour of faffing and dismantling I finally got the bike in, slung the bag over my shoulder and struggled off to the railway station. Fastened into the large, floppy bag, my normally lightweight machine seemed to take on the handling characteristics of a butcher’s bike as I tried to negotiate the Paris Metro. To cut a lon... read more...

Getting a Bike Science Bike Fit - review

Like most cyclists, I sorted out my bike position with a combination of trial and error and well-meaning advice from other cyclists. As a consequence, my saddle height has been up and down more often than West Bromwich Albion! At the start of summer I felt I had it right, I was riding pain free and starting to do some reasonable times in the TTs. I studied photos of myself racing, compared them to ones of Bradley Wiggins and felt reasonably satisfied. The vintage Brian Rourke with its 650c f... read more...

Real Bike Reviews – CKT 368 – Carbon Racer

If we’re being perfectly honest, we knew next to nothing about CKT before this bike arrived at Daily Cycle’s testing HQ. CKT are a French brand who have been making bikes since 2001. The brand has harnessed the expertise of 7 time Tour de France mountains classification winner Richard Virenque to help them fine tune their bikes, as well as using the latest in bike testing technologies to hone their machines. We had CKT’s 368 model which features an integrated seat mast, Ultegra and Strongligh... read more...

Real Reviews - Lazer Tardiz Time Trial Helmet

Time trial helmets are often much of a muchness. Aerodynamics is the real “raison d’etre” for TT helmets and so a low, aero profile with a tapered shape is very much the accepted formula for building a great helmet. Lazer are a Belgium company who make some great helmets for the likes of the Katusha Pro Cycling team as well as many of the world’s top triathletes including GB’s Julie Dibens. Lazer has taken a very comprehensive approach to their Tardiz. The helmet has been designed as an enti... read more...

Real Reviews – Effetto Caffelatex Sealant for tubs

There’s a lot been written about the benefits of tubular tyres - they’re used by the pro-peloton and loved by the cycling purist. The believers tell you they’re faster, with a better “feel” and improved cornering. My vintage TT bike came fitted with them, but I have to admit I don’t really notice a difference. Maybe I’m not enough of a purist. Despite the claimed benefits, even the most ardent tubular fan would tell you there is a down side. Being an amateur cyclist I lack the support v... read more...

Real Reviews – Oakley Flak Jacket

Here at Daily Cycle, we love our gear, what cyclist doesn’t? Having the same gear as the pro’s makes us feel like Denis Menchov or Carlos Sastre. We might never put out the same wattage as Cancellara, but we’ll do our darnedest to get as close as we can, and if we take the odd street sign sprint along the way, then all the better! If there’s one brand which is synonymous with pro cyclist, it’s Oakley. Oakleys have been worn by every pro from Lance Armstrong to Greg Lemond, Mark Cavendish... read more...

Real Reviews – Prendas Oversocks

I’m sure that I’m not alone in the cycling world when I admit to often being asked “why are you wearing your socks over your shoes?” or “are you wearing shoes or just beefy socks?” and it’s true that among non-cyclists the oversock may appear a little bizarre, but those of us who use them on a regular basis have grown to love them, not just for the additional warmth, but for keeping that spring grit off our favourite pair of typically white cycling shoes. I own about 4 pairs of oversocks, of... read more...

Nutritional Review Series – CNP’s Energy Gels

Here at Daily Cycle we’re no strangers to putting all sorts of gear through its paces, from tyres to turbo trainers, bikes to books and from light sets to overshoes but this week we’re taking a leap into the unknown and giving our first group test a go! I’m a big fan of energy gels, I use them all the time, whether it be on long slow winter mileage, club runs or on race day I’ll always have a good few gels stuffed into my back pocket. The thing we find with gels is that they either agree ... read more...
